Brite Futures reveals their 'Dark Past'
7” Picks – “Jag In a Jungle” “Tell It to Me”
RATING – 7.2 spins
Once known as Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, Brite Futures have left behind their adoration of the Oscar-winning actress and forged on with a new name and new songs. Although Brite Futures’ sound is very similar to their previous releases – rife with phat Moog synths, upbeat rhythms and electric guitars – their sound is somehow different. Dark Past, released Nov. 1, is the band’s first new release with their new name – they re-issued their 2008 album Glistening Pleasure as Glistening Pleasure 2.0 in 2010.
The lyrics remain lighthearted, very much like Glistening Pleasure. Opener “Baby Rain” kicks the album off with an incredibly melodic synth lead, accompanied with falsetto vocals. In “Kissed Her Sister” the singer laments about accidentally kissing a girl’s twin sister. Elements of romance are present throughout, much like Pleasure’s “Holding Hands in the Shower” and “Bedroom Costume.”
“Too Young To Kill” and “Best Party Ever (So Far)” fit into the flow of the album perfectly, as the motifs of partying, youth and fun remain incredibly evident. However, the only track that seems like it doesn’t belong is “Winterlude” which is 55 seconds of instrumental in the middle of the album – it sticks out like a sore thumb, and doesn’t add anything to the album.
The album closes with “Black Wedding,” which sounds like a blast from 90’s and 00’s pop bands like STEPS or A-Teens. The song is fun, and the female lead vocals really shake things up for the better. Claire England, the only female member of Brite Futures, doesn’t sing lead vocals as often on this disc, and the band should’ve changed that – she’s talented and sassy.
Ultimately, Dark Past isn’t full of substance or deep lyrics, but if that’s what you’re looking for in Brite Futures, then you’re looking in the wrong place. This album is melodic, fun and feel-good. You can check it out on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify.

Jag in a Jungle Lyrics
Submit Corrections Cancel
I'm feelin' like a jag in a jungle
Maybe we can stumble home to my bungalow
We got a knack for the naughty
Come on, lets ditch this party
I don't need to get lucky
'Cause luck's got nothing to do with it
Hot shot players don't got a shot
'Cause I always get what I want
They ask me all the time how I do it
Maybe I don't try I just do it
