Field Paint and Painting Equipment

By Suz Trusty

Field paint and painting equipment provide the basic markings for sports action and the complex logos that make each field an aesthetically appealing work of art. Additional equipment facilitates the paint removal that clears the way for additional painting required by multiuse fields. Here are some of the most recent advancements that make marking, lining, painting and removal processes easier, faster and more effective.

Another innovative use for the Eco Temp-Line Mantis Hydro Extractor is removal of infield dirt from around the mound and bases on synthetic turf baseball fields.

Environmentally friendly paints

The environment and sustainability are major issues in today's field paint market.

Focusing on those factors, Eco Temp-Line (www. eco-templine. com ) developed Temp-Line Grass. This ultra-concentrated, natural grass turf marking paint is packaged in four plastic bags inside a recyclable cardboard box. Like all Eco paints and coatings, Temp-Line Grass is manufactured with water-based technology. It is nonflammable, nontoxic and VOC (volatile organic compounds) free. While the package graphics have recently been enhanced, the adjustable system remains the same, allowing the user to mix various qualities of paint. When all four bags of paint mix are used to make one 5-gallon batch, the result is a super bright, professional paint suitable for a televised game. At two bags of paint mix per 5 gallons, the bright lines fit general game day use. Add 2 extra gallons of water to that batch for economical practice field paint.

Mike Cheirrett, president and chief technical officer, says, "By adding the water on-site, we eliminate the conventional 5-gallon pail. That cuts packaging waste and shipping weight by 60 percent and reduces storage space requirements by 60 percent."

Mark Lucas, sports turf manager for the University of California, Davis grounds division, says, "Using the Eco Temp-Line paint in recyclable cardboard boxes works well with the overall sustainability focus on campus, while reducing our shipping costs. It also gives us greater flexibility in when we mix and use the paint, with excellent paint quality."

Doug Schattinger, president and CEO of Pioneer Manufacturing (www. pioneerathletics. com), announced additions to Pioneer's VOC-free, Brite Stripe Ultra-Friendly lineup of products that have earned the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "Design for the Environment" (DfE) rating. The DfE program has one key purpose: "to recognize and encourage the formulation of products with environmentally preferable chemistry."

Pioneer has partnered with the DfE program to help meet that goal and advance the environmental, technological and efficiency benefits of current and future products. Schattinger says, "It takes an in-depth process, as all potential ingredients must be traced to their source and evaluated from all angles along the path from raw material to field application. Many were ruled out. Only those that could deliver outstanding performance while answering the tough questions about sustainability, environmental harm and the impact of manufacturing processes are used in production.

"In early January, we introduced the U. S. EPA DfE-recognized, VOC-free Ultra Friendly paints in the colors of blue, orange, yellow and black. Red joined the lineup soon after. We're planning for a June 2012 announcement for all colors of the Brite Stripe and StarLine product lineups," Schattinger says. StarLine is another EPA-recognized VOC-free field marking paint from Pioneer Athletics. It is packaged in a 2.5-gallon, resealable and recyclable container.

Introductions in painting equipment

Tom Heine, specialty business sales manager for Titan (www. titantool. com ), says, the new walk-behind, gas-powred Titan Speeflo PowrLiner 850 is, "lightweight, with a folding handle for easy transport and storage. Specially formulated poly tires give a smooth, flat-free ride with a straight lock or free-wheel setting on the front caster. The LX-40 spray gun has an in-handle filter and SC-6 reversible striping tip. With the reversible gun mount, the operator can stripe from either the front or rear tire for lining natural or synthetic turf fields or striping asphalt parking lots. With the removable spray gun and our DirectLink pressure control, the user can stencil and paint with airless technology at pressures from 200 to 3,000 PSI. They can paint anything from logos to the maintenance buildings, park benches or fences."

Also new from Titan is the two-in-one TR2 Reversible Line Striping Tip. Heine says, "Two tips in one give greater flexibility and quick, easy changeover for multiuse applications."

Kromer Co. LLC (www. kromerco. com ) continues to incorporate high-tech design and new attachment options to enhance the versatility of their ride-on multiuse equipment. Company President Ronn Ponath says, "Our one-machine, one-operator concept uses our FCX chassis as the base, which includes full hydraulic and electrical capability. Each machine can be custom designed with specified attachments to meet the needs of the facility. Our Field Commander Pro Model is equipped to take any and all attachments now or in the future, as needs change and new innovations are introduced."

Ponath says, "Our new Line Expert by Titan is an airless, high-pressure, walk-behind paint machine designed for economy and easy use on natural and synthetic turf and asphalt surfaces. Our machine is equipped with a pressure gauge, spray shield and an upgraded spray tip. The front wheel lock can be engaged or disengaged directly from the handlebar for straight line or freestyle paint applications."

The two-in-one TR2 Reversible Line Striping Tip from Titan provides both lining and stenciling options in one tip.

The terms "long-lasting" and "easy-to-use" keep popping up when George Bannerman, owner of Bannerman, Ltd. (www. sportsturfmagic. com ), talks about the company's product line. He says, "Small details make a big difference. The B-LC-1234 Infield Chalker uses a moving mechanical bottom to keep the chalk moving down and out. The B-WLM-234 Outfield Paint Striper has an endless ribbed belt to pick up the paint, with a paint-saver roller to scrub of any excess."

Bannerman has reintroduced the Pre-Line mower. A 12-inch cut width roatry mower with the wheels set inside the cutting width for a no-show finish. The clippings are dispersed to both sides, leaving a clean surface for painting and lining.

Newstripe, Inc. (www. newstripe. com ) recently introduced the 4600 SP Airless, a self-propelled, walk behind version of the 4400 Airless. Company representative Peter Woods says, "The Newstripe walk-behind machines use standard 5-gallon pails for quick and easy color changes and fast cleanup. They have large pneumatic tires and ergonomic handles. Our Airless models feature a fully adjustable zero to 3,000-PSI pump. The 4400 and 4600 SP are equipped with a 126 cc OHC engine that sprays 2 to 6-inch-wide lines using either thinned or nonthinned paint. The inlet filter screen, gun filter and reversible spray tip prevent clogs."

Newstripe also introduced the NewRider 5000 Field Marker. This airless ride-on machine features hydrostatic drive with a 14 hp OHC engine, electric start, front-wheel drive with rear steering, an adjustable tilt steering column, and foot-pedal control for forward and reverse and to activate the spray gun. Woods says, "It's equipped with a 50-gallon poly tank and a zero to 3,000 PSI pump. The 2.5-gallon onboard purge tank, in-line filter and reversible spray tip end clogs. The quick-release gun with 25 feet of hose makes stencil painting easy."

John Klesk, worldwide product marketing manager for the Contractor Equipment Division of Graco, Inc. (www. graco. com ), introduced the company's new FieldLazer G400 as a "Glide" addition to their "Stride" (walk units) and "Ride" product lineup. Klesk says, "It's the industry's first all-in-one, stand-on, self-propelled field marking machine. Riding upright improves operator visibility, and the shock-absorbing platform reduces fatigue. The platform makes it easy to get on or off, and it flips up for transport or storage. Productivity is increased with an operating speed from zero to 10 mph forward and zero to 6 mph in reverse, and self-centering steering that locks in place for a straight line, automatically swivels to turn. Smooth-ride turf tires reduce vibration for production of long, straight lines over any terrain. The 25-gallon paint hopper needs fewer refills for quick striping of multiple fields. The machine also accepts 5-gallon buckets."

It incorporates the standard Graco airless paint spray technology and Endurance pump, ProStart engine and easy-clean paint hopper.

Paint removal on synthetic fields

One option package from Kromer is the Chameleon, designed specifically for quick and easy paint removal on synthetic fields. The FCX chassis has the hydraulically driven, front-mounted End Zone/Logo Remover system (EZR), which uses 3-by-20-inch-diameter rotary brushes to scrub large painted areas. The hydraulically driven, side-mounted Line Remover System (LR) uses dual inline 14-inch-diameter rotary brushes for removing painted lines. It's equipped with a 100-gallon water tank plus a 17-gallon front-mounted tank for remover solution. In 2012, additional synthetic field attachments will become available.

In one of his presentations at the 2012 STMA Conference, Dr. Andy McNitt reviewed the NFL Synthetic Turf Game Day Standards. While these standards apply only to those specific fields, not even NFL practice fields, they are drawing the attention of all sports field managers with synthetic fields. One of the issues addressed within these standards is increased Gmax evaluations due to paint buildup. Thus the standards call for removal (dislodging and sucking out) of built-up paint after every four paintings.

Jeff Fisher, national sales manager and company equipment specialist, reports the Eco Temp-Line Mantis Hydro Extractor was designed specifically to clean and remove paint and dirt from synthetic infill turf. He says, "Another innovative use of the Extractor is removal of infield dirt on synthetic baseball fields around first, second and third bases and the pitcher's mound. From continually tweaking the machine, we've found we can rejet a bit to make it even more effective for that application."

With the 40-inch cleaning path, the Hydro Extractor can cover 70 square feet per minute. Fisher says, "The process cleans paint from the synthetic fibers, and extracts the paint and dirt from the infill. With two passes of the unit, on average, only 1 tablespoon of infill material per square foot is removed."

Grant Davisson, turf manager for Minnesota Vikings Football LLC, uses the Eco Temp-Line Mantis Hydro Extractor for those fast turnarounds at the Metrodome. He says, "We may get the field at midnight on Saturday for a Sunday afternoon game. With all the pregame activity on the field, that only allows four to five hours for the changeover. We put the remover solvent down first, using backpack sprayers, and give it time to react with the paint. Then we make cross-field passes with the Extractor to remove and extract the paint and dirt."

As researchers, suppliers and sports field managers work together to improve all these processes, the fields of 2012 will showcase the results.

i dont know if your still looking. but if you have the capitol. id suggest going with an electric sprayer.

i have to check the brand name of ours we have 2 push behind electric sprayers. 5 gallon hoppers.

last time i had to use spray cans a case of 12 cans was like $54 and we needed 6 cans to do 1 soccer field. we have 4.

we buy the Latex field paint in 5 gallon pails from our local paint distributor and then dilute it into 10-15 gallon with water. depending on the events schedule and the brightness were looking for. the more you dilute it with water the faster it fades out. Last purchase was $32/5gal pail /

couple of things. VERY MAintenance intensive. If you dont clean them out well then they can be a royal pain to get primed and spraying. Biggest spare part to have on hand is a bunch of spray nozzels. I find that you are better off Putting a "Clean Nozzle" in before every use. We hen clean the nozzles in a local co's Ultrasonic cleaner

Finally we have replace the onboard chargers at least 3 times in the last 5 years at over $100 a shot. finally went out and bought a $35 smart battery charger from Home depot and have not had a problem in over a year.
