Overview

Fuel treatment additives and stabilizers have been around for years. Most of them consist of some formulation of naptha or alcohol, and are designed to either stabilize fuel, or improve combustion in situations where small amounts of water have formed inside the fuel lines or tank.

With the advent of E10 ethanol (alcohol) blended gasoline in my area several years ago, I began to notice greatly reduced fuel storage life. The 10% ethanol in E10 fuel is hygroscopic, meaning that it will attract water from the air which is absorbed into the fuel. This lowers fuel octane and intensifies the tendency of the gasoline to separate into layers. It attacks some rubber/synthetic fuel lines (I replaced mine) and promotes corrosion in the fuel system (it takes only a tiny flake of rust to jam the tiny orifices of carburetors on a small gas engine).

In my case, fuel stored in my spare gas cans began to separate into layers in as little as two weeks. My chainsaw and boat motors became very hard to start and ran poorly unless I drained the tank and the carburetor float bowl after each use. Even then I still had problems, and had to disassemble and clean the outboard’s carburetor twice. Since my problems originated with the E10 ethanol gas, I first tried (unsuccessfully) to find gasoline without it. Then I decided to try a fuel stabilizer. I knew I didn’t want a product that contained alcohol, since that ingredient was the source of my problems. After trying several fuel treatment products, I settled on Star Tron® .

Product Formulation

Star Tron is a fuel treatment formulated for use in all 2 and 4-cycle gasoline engines (it's also advertised as a diesel fuel supplement, but I have not used it for this purpose). It consists of purified naptha with 5% active ingredients. The manufacturer considers these ingredients proprietary, but states they are based on naturally occurring enzymes (biocatalysts) which increase and control the rate of fuel burn, improve combustion, break down fuel sludge and disperse water in the fuel as sub-micron sized droplets that can be burned in the engine.

Star Tron is also designed to stabilize fuel chemistry for long-term storage. It’s important to remember that Star Tron is best used to preserve fresh fuel; like most other fuel additives, it cannot ‘restore’ fuel that has large amounts of water in it.

User Experience

For the last three years I have used Star Tron in all of my small gasoline engines and fuel tanks that use E10 blended gasoline. While I cannot speak to this product’s various claims about fuel enzymes and chemical interactions, I can state that it has worked much better than similar fuel treatments and ‘dry gas’ additives I have tried.

Star Tron contains no alcohol, and I found that fuel dosed with the product stores for three months or more without separating. I no longer have to drain the gas tanks on my small two and four-cycle engines after each use, but only when putting them away for the season. And I haven’t had to tear down a carburetor in three years.

I am hesitant to recommend this Star Brite Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment stuff because the result I am getting in my six cylinder Toyota 4-Runner is just short of miraculous and I can hardly believe it. My Toyota (with an automatic transmission) was stumbling and chugging a bit at about 45 miles per hour. I had been assuming the problem was dirty fuel injectors so I dumped various brands of cleaner into the gas tank with no discernable result. I read about the Star Brite product in Popular Science magazine and began to think the `stumbling' in my SUV might be due to water from using the alcohol laced gasoline sold around here.

I have run two tanks of gasoline through my Toyota using the prescribed amount of Star Brite Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment and the `stumbling' has stopped. Honestly, I can hardly believe it. Either the Star Brite Enzyme stuff is doing just what they say it does or this is a temporary phenomenon caused by something else beyond my comprehension. It sure looks like it is working according to the claims made for it.

I must say the idea of enzymes having anything to do with a tank full of water, alcohol and gasoline is a reality stretch for me. I taught high school chemistry for years before my retirement and I am somewhat skeptical about the enzyme claims.

Be that as it may, this Star Brite treatment is apparently working as advertised for whatever reason and I really don't care why. I plan to buy some more.

I DID BUY SOME MORE:

I have now used the Star Brite treatment regularly for over six weeks and it has apparently solved the problem I was experiencing with the alcohol laden gasoline I am forced to use in our state.

It only takes two ounces of the product per tank of gas so a bottle of it goes a long way.

It is available in 8,16 and 32 ounce quantities. Don't assume it is necessary to dump the whole bottle of Star Brite into the tank like other gasoline additives require.
